An existing hotel in Oxford in dire need of an overhaul, we were brought in to design a full brand system. We left our mark by developing everything from the narrative to the identity to signage and way-finding.

Drawing from southern hospitality, the historic charm found on the nearby square, and the enduring ties to Ole Miss University, our identity carries a familiar perspective that’s delightfully unexpected.

Our primary mark is grounded by a bold, almost collegiate, typeace but set on a diagonal to give it a more approachable feel. Combined with an ornamental script and a rounded sans, there’s a feeling of familiarity that comes with the brand.

The color palette balances a trustworthy, academic tone with vibrant hues that add a nostalgic spirit and also provides some flexibility. Additionally, a
series of decorative patterns ranging from traditional to artful and loose,. were used to layer in an energetic homespun feel.

Our eclectic mix of illustrations highlights everything from local lore to experiences you might enjoy at the hotel,  adding a touch of casual humor along the way.

Through tasteful takes on traditional aesthetics and a modern approach to southern hospitality, The Oliver Hotel offers an experience marked by both warmth and wit—a welcoming place for all things ole and new.

Inside the hotel, you find the Kingswood restaurant and bar. From the identity and typography, to the menus and illustrations, every touchpoint was designed to feel enriched with personality.

A primary logo that is interchangeable between a horizontal and vertical look allows the tone to find the sweet spot between playful and serious.  The region’s iconic magnolia trees serves as a secondary icon and plays tribute to the the city that the Kingswood calls home.

A large part in what makes the Kingwood so special is the different uses of typography across the restaurant. A bold serif logo system is paired with expressive scripts, giving the brand flexibility across everything from menus and merchandise to signage and social applications.

The color palette combines rich, muted tones with softer accents to create a look that resembles a warm memory.  Every element, whether that is hand-drawn illustrations featuring cookware or embossed drink menus, was designed so that you feel a cohesive experience that feels distinctly Oxford the moment you step inside the Kingswood.
Within the friendly confines of the Oliver is where you’ll find Nightbird, Oxford’s hidden gem. The experience inside there is an intimate one, where the mix of moody ambiance and drinks brings those searching for a sense of exclusivity to the speakeasy.

Nightbird takes its name from a manuscript that literary legend and Mississippian William Faulkner wrote in the 1930s, serving as the muse of the brand.  What comes of this is a delicate balance of sophisticated and playful, with our script typography blended with illustrations.

Playing into this literary theme, our secondary mark is a NB monogram that can be thought of as a mark that a book publisher might use as a stamp or an author might use as  their initials—a short, sweet sign off for those in the know. Combine that with the graphic mark of an illustration of a boozy birdbath and you get a brand that is both charming and memorable.

From the layered storytelling to the richly detailed visual identity, Nightbird was designed to feel like a secret worth discovering. By being rooted in Oxford’s literary history, the brand is able to capture the allure of slipping away into somewhere intimate, hidden just enough in plain sight to make you want to stay for one more round.
